Raute has deployed AI-enhanced defect detection systems in production environments for veneer-based engineered wood manufacturing, according to the technology supplier. The analyzers are industrial systems used to measure, grade and classify veneer and panels at different production stages, providing real-time quality data to support production decisions across the process.

The AI capability combines industrial machine vision with deep learning models specifically developed for veneer-based engineered wood production. The systems identify defects consistently across different wood species, surface characteristics and production conditions, generating detailed defect maps for individual sheets to enable more precise and repeatable decisions. The analyzers also integrate measurements of moisture and strength properties alongside visual defect detection.

Applications include green veneer inspection after peeling, dry veneer grading after drying, and panel repairing and grading. Early-stage defect detection prevents low-quality material from entering energy-intensive processes such as drying and hot pressing.
