SCA Wood to invest in wireless condition monitoring at Tunadal planing mill in Sweden

SCA Wood Scandinavia will install wireless vibration and temperature sensors at its planing mill in Tunadal, Sweden, to monitor process-critical fans, according to the technology supplier SPM Instrument AB.

The system uses Airius LTE-M sensors that transmit measurement data via Telia's mobile network directly to SCA's local server, where analysis and diagnostics software Condmaster Ruby 2026 is installed. The investment also includes handheld BearingChecker and VibChecker instruments for measuring shock pulse levels and vibration on equipment such as the planer, splitting saw and pellet plant. BearingChecker evaluates mechanical condition while VibChecker detects misalignment and imbalance, with both providing instant green-yellow-red color-coded condition feedback.

SPM's condition monitoring department, SPM Academy & Consulting, will handle remote monitoring and analysis of automatic alarms, with SCA personnel accessing machine condition, alarm and monthly reports through the ServiceNet portal. The goal is to obtain early warnings for hard-to-reach roof-mounted fans, enabling planned maintenance and avoiding production stops.

SPM service engineers will install sensors and software during the summer of 2026. SCA Wood Scandinavia operates as the wood-processing division within the SCA forest group.
