Takizawabeniya produces hardwood plywood and veneers in Ashibetsu, Hokkaido. Founded in 1936, the company maintains hand-inspected manufacturing and uses rotary peeling from logs to support a wide product range, high quality and small-batch production. It evaluates each tree to determine the best use of the material and aims to produce products that honor long-grown timber. Log procurement begins in November–December and continues through April–May to secure a year’s supply; logs are inspected individually and cooled with water in summer to prevent decay and cracking. The company peels logs on a rotary lathe rather than importing veneers in order to meet customer-specific grades and thicknesses, and can produce custom core veneer thicknesses. Special attention is paid to end-grain: each veneer sheet is visually checked in a patching process, large knots are filled to avoid defects on edges, enabling use of panels without additional edge finishing. During layup, overlaps and debris are checked by eye; assemblies undergo an initial cold press for final inspection and then a hot press for bonding to ensure clean edges. Face veneers are hand-selected and matched by skilled workers for consistent appearance. Adhesives used do not contain the 14 regulated VOC substances, including formaldehyde, supporting use in nurseries, schools and other child-occupied facilities. The company has also started producing plywood from thinned timber to make effective use of local Hokkaido resources.
