Gross felling in Sweden decreased in 2025 to 87.0 million m3 standing volume, a decline of just under 1% from 87.7 million m3 in 2024, according to the Swedish Forest Agency.
Net felling, the harvested volume of tree trunks fully or partially removed, amounted to 70.5 million m3 in 2025. Just under half of net felling consisted of softwood sawlogs, 44% was pulpwood and 8% was firewood. Harvesting of softwood sawlogs is estimated to have decreased by just over 1% compared with 2024, pulpwood harvesting remained largely unchanged and fuelwood harvesting decreased by 4%.
Exports of harvested roundwood rose by about 10%, from 0.9 million m3 in 2024 to a preliminary 1.0 million m3 in 2025, which represented just over 1% of the Swedish roundwood harvest. Total roundwood imports decreased by approximately 9%, from 9.2 million m3 in 2024 to 8.4 million m3 in 2025. The fall in imports was entirely in pulpwood, which decreased by 1.8 million m3, while imports of softwood sawlogs increased by 1.0 million m3.
Regionally, felling decreased in the southern parts of the country: Götaland fell by 6% and Svealand by 2%. Felling increased in Northern Norrland by 9% and in Southern Norrland by 4%. The largest volumes were in Värmlands county (7.7 million m3) and Västra Götaland county (7.5 million m3), the latter representing 9% of total national felling.
About 65% of the harvested volume in 2025 came from final felling, 26% from thinning and the remainder from other types of fellings. The average felling volume during 2020–2024 was 265 m3 standing volume per hectare in final felling and 70 m3 per hectare in thinning. Average annual final felling area was 209,000 hectares and average annual thinning area was 313,000 hectares for 2020–2024. Compared with 2019–2023, the final felling area decreased by 9% and the thinning area increased by 5%. Removal of branches and tree tops for energy purposes was undertaken on 35% of the final felling area.
Average final felling area for fellings larger than 0.5 hectares was 3.5 hectares in 2024. The average in Northern Norrland was 5.1 hectares and in Götaland 2.3 hectares; individual forest owners' average final felling areas were about 40% smaller than those of other forest owners.
Spruce made up 58% of the harvested volume in 2025, pine 31% and hardwood 11%.
